Over the past year, The Elders’ Walk Together campaign has reached nearly 70 million people around the world with stories of global Sparks of Hope. Africans Rising was honoured to work with The Elders to engage our respective communities in peace, health justice, and equality initiative across Africa.
We are even more humbled by the fact that we made to the honourable list of the Sparks of Hope. “One vital strand of Africans Rising’s work is providing support to individual activists. These brave change-makers often face challenges, barriers and intimidation when trying to fight inequality and injustice”_ #WalkTogether Campaign said about Africans Rising.
On July 18th, the world celebrated 100 years since the birth of our beloved Nelson Mandela. In South Africa this day is a day of service, known as Mandela Day. Understandably, the Elders chose Mandela Day to honour the 100 Sparks of Hope from around the world with a brand new 100 Sparks of Hope Peace Park, in which 100 trees were planted, one for each organisation. Africans Rising team members joined the Elders, including Kofi Annan, Graça Machel, Mary Robinson, Lakhdar Brahimi and Martti Ahtisaari, along with the Sparks of Hope in a symbolic walk through Johannesburg with around 2,000 young people joining in.
